Yo! I know that it not easy to the beginner to try to configuration ODBC to connection to MySql and for be sure and I will never forget all knowledge as I know I'll tell you step by step, Hope all will help you Okey! let's go to step one.
STEP-1.
You have to download ODBC for window (If your server is Window) and download the version as your server was support, for more information you can see here "Download ODBC Driver" Oh! and please install in computer that you want to connect to an other server. (You have to register on site for free download)
STEP-2
After you have completed installed ODBC driver on your server then go to "Data Sources (ODBC 32-bit)"
STEP-3
Click on "System DSN" tab, you will see the popup (If you do not see that mean, you did wrong! ^_^ XOXO) Select the ODBC version as you have installed (For me I choose ODBC version 3.51)
STEP-4
Then you will see the popup window for you to fill information for connecting, then please fill all data as requested
- Data Source Name (put the name you as your idea but this job it quite hard for programmer to thinking the name and me too ^_^)
- Put IP address for server you want to connect to or if you want to connect localhost, just put this name in to TCP/Server
- Port, 3306 it was the default, you can change to an other port as your database server configuration
- User, It's your database username
- Password, It's your database password
- Click on "Test" if you fill all done to make sure for connection
- Oh! and one more thing, this is very important for me ^_^ because I am in Thailand and we use Thai language, do not forget to set Character Set by click at "Details>>"
STEP-5
Character Set up, Click on Details then you will see many tabs appears, Do not hesitated to put character code as your requested for me I choose "tis620", WHY!? because if I forget and after I transfer data from MySql to SQL, I can not read Thai text, It will be an alien language ^_^ then PLEASE DO NOT MISS and if you have already set to tis620 it still not work, you have to config your window language in this step here
